For my home brief, I decided that my own idea of of home was definitely going to have the backdrop of my home city, Sheffield.
Once I had decided on the setting I then had to choose what aspect of Sheffield I was going to capture, the one thing that I have always noticed is the amazing amount of street art around the area, something that slips to the back of your mind offer you have spent such a long time in the area.
Home for me, is the art and culture of the area, so that’s what I decided to capture.
This mural is quite tucked away, down an alley next to a screen printing shop, it’s beautifully intricate, melding perfectly with the texture of the wall, and using pipes and air conditioning units. The artist of the mural is Kid Acne, a prevalent street artist in Sheffield.
There wasn’t much colour in this photo originally, so I decided to make it black and white, I also increased the sharpness slightly to bring out some of the detail.
This next one was attached to a piece of plywood on an abandoned building in one of Sheffield’s industrial districts. I dialled down the exposure on my camera to bring out the blacks in the image, to give it more of a silhouette look. I’m not sure who this artist is, but there are the remnants of one of kid acne’s stickers towards the bottom of the image.
Another unknown artist, for this image I sapped out some colour so it wouldn’t clash with the more monochrome images in this set. I also turned the sharpness down slightly so that the colours blended together, also bringing out the blacks in the eyes and mouth.
I decided to include this image in this brief to give a small amount of context to where these photos were taken. Sheffield has a rich history of industry, most of which has fallen into disrepair, the history does stay alive, however, as most of these building remain untouched to this day.
This picture is definitely my favourite, it involved no setup it occurred completely by chance when my friend photographed something to the left of the frame. when he looked down towards his camera
For this photo, my camera had sadly ran out of battery, so instead I used my phone to capture it, luckily it composed the image quite nicely, having just enough room to create the look I wanted, there was a lot more to this mural (Painted onto the side of a construction site’s wall), but instead of capturing the whole thing, I separated this one section. I also used the burn tool to bring out the blacks, making them a lot deeper.
